Class of '96 Grad Needs Help!

I would like to tell you the story of Gloucester County native Stephen Seder. He was born and raised in Deptford Township and graduated from Deptford High school in 1996. He then served his country in the U.S. Coastguard. He was eventually stationed in North Carolina, where he currently resides with his fiance Mandy and her son Skyler. He is loving father to a beautiful 9 year old daughter and a wonderful son and brother to his family that still reside in Deptford.  Stephen is an avid runner, surfer, hunter, fisherman and awesome soccer coach.

Tragically on July 27, 2013 Stephen's life was instantly changed. Stephen was out enjoying a beautiful day on the Atlantic Beach in North Carolina with his fiance's son, Skyler and two of his friends, when he ran ahead of the boys to dive into the ocean as he did a million times before. Unfortunately, he dove right into a sand bar; hitting his head and injuring his back and neck. Skyler and his friends began yelling for help. An unknown man jumped in to save Stephen. He was not breathing. He had water in his lungs and stomach. Thankfully, there were a few ICU nurses on the beach that day that aided the lifeguards in his successful resuscitation. He was then airlifted to Greensville, NC, where they performed emergency surgery to repair his broken neck and place him in a halo. After stabilization he was transferred by medical plane to Sheppards Center in Georgia.

The doctors then revealed the news to Stephen and his family that he is paralyzed. The extent of the paralysis is still to be seen, but at this time he has no use of his arms or legs. With loving support of family and friends and the determination of a strong honorable man we still have hope. Obviously with such injuries, extensive rehab and medical treatment will be needed. Stephen's insurance only covers 12 weeks of rehabilitation.  He is looking at a minimum of 6 months.

This is why our family has set up a face-book page - Stephen Seder Needs Our Help as a forum for well wishes, donations, and information on upcoming charity events. We will be holding a benefit walk at Cooper River Park on September 21st. Registration @ 8 at the Columbus statue and walk at 9 am. Registration is $40 and has to be done by September 18th. No registration fees can be collected at the park due to park rules.  All checks can be made out to Stephen Seder and mailed to Kathy Curtis 682 Iszard Ct. Deptford, NJ 08096 - Please include a shirt size on the registration which will be posted on the face-book page or email kcurtis2008@yahoo.com.

Thank you for taking the time to read Stephen's story. We would appreciate any help getting his story out there. We have photos available on Stephen Seder Needs Our Help  face-book page. You can reach me at 856-853-7730 or @ kcurtis2008@yahoo.com with any questions. Thank you again, Kathy Curtis
